YouTube is introducing new rules and labels that require creators on the platform to disclose whether artificial intelligence (AI) was used to make their videos.
YouTube Product Management Vice Presidents Emily Moxley and Jennifer Flannery O’Connor revealed in a blog post that the change will occur “in the coming months.” This will require creators to disclose when they have used AI tools to create “altered or synthetic content that is realistic.”
A new label that YouTube will be rolling out starts in the description of a given video. The below image label provides a disclaimer. Moxley and O’Conner mentioned that an additional label would be placed on content covering “sensitive topics” like ongoing conflicts or political elections.
Creators found making videos containing synthetic content and refusing or ignoring the requirement to put AI labels in the description may result in penalties such as content removal, suspension from the YouTube Partner Program, and more.
In addition to requiring AI disclaimers in videos, YouTube will be allowing viewers to request the removal of AI-generated content using a privacy request. Music partners can request the removal of AI-generated music that mimics artists’ voices.
As AI-generated content proliferates further on the Internet, YouTube is trying to ensure quality, original content that cannot be stolen succeeds while anything that comes across as copying or stealing fails. Other platforms, such as Civitai, are incentivizing deepfakes and AI content with “Bounties”.
