Microsoft has built a new ‘Windows App’ to access the OS on a variety of devices, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, and web browsers.
This app is designed to replace Windows 365 and turn it into a central hub that streams a copy of Windows from either a remote PC, Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, Windows 365, or Remote Desktop Services.
At the moment, the Windows App requires Microsoft’s range of business accounts. However, there is a chance it will be made available to consumers as well. For instance, the sign-in prompt in the Windows App while using the Windows OS suggests that the app can be accessed using a personal Microsoft Account, but it doesn’t work at the moment.
Microsoft has used similar apps to connect PCs remotely for a long time, most especially with the Remote Desktop Connection app that ships with the Windows OS. Having a dedicated Windows App could signify that Microsoft is planning to move Windows fully to the cloud.
It was confirmed during the FTC v. Microsoft hearing that the company wishes to move Windows to the cloud for consumers, and has been offering the same functionality with Windows 365 for businesses.
