The iconic house from AMC’s Breaking Bad TV series is up for sale, and the owners of the home in one of the older neighborhoods of Albuquerque, New Mexico are hoping the property’s role in the famous drama series will sell for a hefty amount.
Breaking Bad tells the story of a high school chemistry teacher named Walter White and his former student, Jesse Pinkman, who team up to cook methamphetamine. Even though the series concluded over 10 years ago, its legacy continues to draw fans to the home and other parts of town that were filmed for the show.
In addition, New Mexico’s governor also recently tapped Bryan Cranston, the actor who portrays White, to star in a campaign against littering in the state.
While Breaking Bad certainly has left its mark on New Mexico and this quiet block in Albuquerque, the listing is sure to reignite interest.
Joanne Quintana, the owner of the home, recently spoke on local TV station KOB-TV, stating that her parents bought the place in the 1970s with her and her siblings growing up there. Once the show grew in popularity, it became difficult to protect the family. They had to install security cameras and a metal fence to keep fans at bay.
Now that her parents have left, Quintana is trying to sell.
“This was our family home from 1973, almost 52 years,” she told the station. “So we’re going to walk away with just our memories. It’s time to move on. We’re done. There’s no reason to fight anymore.”
Back in 2006, a film scout approached Quintana’s mother expressing interest in shooting a pilot episode at the home. Within just a few months, the equipment was set up and filing started.
The family got to meet Cranston and the other stars and watched from behind the scenes as crew members worked Quintana’s mother always made sure to offer cookies for the cast and crew. The inside of the home was used to prep, while interior scenes were shot in a studio.
The housing market in Albuquerque is not what it would have been during the time Walter White applied for a mortgage, and the price paid by Quintana’s parents 50 years ago is much, much higher now. Today, the median price in the area is close to $400,000, with interest rates expected to hover around 6% this year.
Certain online real estate calculators have estimated the market value of the four-bedroom home at just over $340,000. Yet with the famous TV brand attached to it, it’s now being listed for just under $4 million.
