Understanding the Genshin Impact Pity System

In a similar way to competing gacha experiences, the Genshin Impact Pity System allows for the random pulling of characters through Wishes. Although it may often feel uneventful as a result of low drop rates, miHoYo has implemented a pity system to improve player chances.

Wishes require the game’s premium currency, Primogems. With Primogems, you’re able to convert and purchase Fates, or tokens that allow for pulling from specific banners. Each banner requires 10 of a specific token. The two types of Fates include Acquaint Fate and Intertwined Fate.

Prior to your investment of Fates and Primogems into the various character and weapon banners, it helps to understand the mechanics behind the Genshin Impact Pity System. Members of the community have even developed their own Wish Simulators for you to test drop rates in real-time.

How does the Genshin Impact Pity System function?

In Genshin Impact, the pity system is designed to guarantee that you will receive certain quality ranks of characters and weapons after performing a set amount of Wishes. The Pity can be directly traced through the History view of the Wish page.

Simply count how many wishes you’ve made since pulling your last 5-star. It’s important to note that the number of wishes to acquire pity differs between the different banners.

Character Event Wishes – Pity

Due to the incredible value that they bring to a party, the 5-star characters in Genshin Impact are inherently designed to have the lowest drop rates, at a 0.6% chance of pull. The good news? You will certainly receive a 5-star by the 90th wish for the banner.

Epitomized Path & Weapon Even Wishes – Pity

The banner for Weapon Event Wishes guarantees a 5-star weapon on the player’s 80th wish rather than the 90th. Clearly, this is the most generous of all the banners. However, since weapons do not make as drastic a difference in throughput and performance when compared to the characters, many players opt to save their Primogems for other banners instead.

Conversely, Genshin Impact version 2.0 introduced what is referred to as the Epitomized Path. This is a brand new mechanic for Weapon Event Wishes. As the banner normally features two specific 5-star weapons with improved drop rates, the Epitomized Path lets players tailor the pulls towards their weapon of choice.

By “charting a course” towards one of the two, players receive a single Fate Point when the opposite weapon drops. If you somehow get 2 Fate Points and do not receive the weapon you charted a course to, the next 5-star weapon you pull will be guaranteed to be your chosen weapon.

There are some downsides to this banner, however. For example, when you receive the weapon of choice, you can change your course, but all your Fate Points will disappear. Also, you won’t be able to accumulate Fate Points until a course has been chosen.

Standard Wishes – Pity

This banner has identical pity rates to the one found in the Character Event Wishes banner. Yet, the difference here is that players get to receive both characters and weapons by hitting pity on their 90th wish.

It’s more of a challenge to get meaningful rewards here, so unless there is something very specific you still need (e.g., Keqing, Mona, or Qiqi), it’s better to avoid this banner.

What exactly is soft pity in Genshin Impact?

While the base chance for obtaining any 5-star character sits at 0.6%, there is in fact a hidden system known as soft pity designed to increase rates after a specific number of pulls.

Between the 75th pull and 90th pull from the Standard Wish and Character Event Wish banners, the drop rate steadily increases from as low as 0.6% all the way up to 100%.

On the other hand, between the 65th pull and 90th pull from the Weapon Event Wish banner, the drop rate steadily increases from 0.6% to 100%.

The 50/50 System

If you’ve taken the time to check out Genshin Impact content on social media, it’s likely that you have, at the very least, heard about the 50/50 system. This means that for every Character Event Wish banner, you have a 50/50 probability of winning the character showcased.

Moreover, if you are lucky enough to win on your first try for the 50/50 chance, you have another 50/50 probability of receiving the promoted character on your next 5-star pull.

Similarly, by losing the 50/50 to a standard character, the player is guaranteed the promoted character on their next 5-star pull.

While most gamers do not get even remotely excited about the Weapon Event Banner, it has an even more generous 50/50 system. You will receive a 75% probability of obtaining a featured weapon. Here, the system is arguably 75/25. In addition, if you receive a different 5-star weapon than the one advertised on the banner, your next 5-star pull is guaranteed to be one of the ones on the banner.

Always tread carefully when making Wishes. You are never guaranteed any one weapon because of the multiple listings on the Weapon Event Wish banner.

Will my pity carry between banners?

Sadly, the Genshin Impact Pity System does not carry over between different types of banners. This is because the weapon and character banners both have differing pity counts. To receive a guarantee of a 5-star, you must accumulate pity for both types of banners separately.

Fortunately, though, the pity carries over between the same type of banners. If you go and wish 10 times on a Character Event Wish banner for, let’s say, Venti, 10 pity carries over to Tartaglia on the other character banner, for instance.

The same dichotomy applies to the 50/50 system. Losing out on the Venti banner means that your next 5-star is guaranteed to pull the featured character. As long as you’ve got enough Wishes left, you will most certainly pull Tartaglia.
