Paramount has confirmed a third Top Gun film is in development at the studio. Maverick director Joe Kosinski and writer Ehren Kruger are reportedly co-piloting the project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say that Paramount wants to bring back Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell. At the moment anyway, Cruise signed a non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. to make original and franchise films.
Back in July 2022, Teller discussed the potential of a Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise, but it was apparently “all up to Tom.” In Maverick, Teller portrayed Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Cruise’s character, and Powell played Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin. This is not the only big sequel in the works, as Powell is assigned to Twisters as well.
In 2023, Kosinski said that Cruise wasn’t really up for a sequel, particularly after Tony Scott, the director of the original film, passed away. However, Top Gun: Maverick, which was released over 35 years after the classic, became the first film of Tom Cruise to gross $1 billion at the global box office.
