HBO’s iconic drama, The Sopranos, which helped popularize serial television, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. As a result, HBO is releasing deleted scenes, streaming episodes for free, and hosting fan gatherings in the real world.
A new official TikTok account (@TheSopranos) is running 25-second recaps of all 86 episodes across 6 seasons. This is clearly a bid to get new people into the show and then sign up for Max to watch.
The Max app has an anniversary hub for The Sopranos which includes 15 never-before-seen deleted scenes including more than five hours of behind-the-scenes content.
According to Variety, the first two episodes of Season 1 will be made free to watch on the official YouTube channel for Max, while certain streaming platforms for cable providers will include free episodes as well.
January 10 marks the exact 25th anniversary, and has members of the cast getting back together for a “family dinner.” Series star James Gandolfini, who portrayed Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano, passed away in June 2013.
Fans located in New York and Los Angeles can visit a Satriale pop-up location to receive Sopranos-inspired food through Postmates. Da Nico, an Italian restaurant in New York City, is offering a Sopranos-inspired menu from January 11-February 4. This includes the baked ziti made by Carmela (Edie Falco) during the show’s run.
The Sopranos is a drama series created by David Chase which ran from 1999-2007, spanning 86 episodes and 6 seasons. It focuses on Tony Soprano and his life of crime as a mafioso from New Jersey. The way the show humanizes Soprano made viewers feel and understand him, despite his murderous tendencies as a ruthless mobster. The 2007 finale was remembered for the sudden cut to black.
Chase never continued producing TV after The Sopranos, but he was involved with the prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark (2021), featuring Michael Gandolfini (James’s son), playing a young Tony Soprano.
