‘The Social Network 2’ Is Being Considered, Says David Fincher

David Fincher, the director of the Oscar-winning film about the founding of Facebook, has now confirmed that there have been talks about a potential sequel to The Social Network (2010).

The original movie follows the life of successful tech entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg during his days attending Harvard University and the manner in which he conceived the idea to build a revolutionary social media platform. It also includes all the lawsuits, relationship woes, and other challenges he faced to make Facebook into the multi-billion dollar global product it is today.

Recently, in an interview with The Guardian, Fincher said he’s been in discussion with Aaron Sorkin, the original screenwriter, about making The Social Network 2. However, he made mention of this with a grain of salt, saying that they “have talked about it, but, um … that’s a can of worms.”

The Social Network (2010) won awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. It also won nominations for many other categories, including Best Actor for Jesse Eisenberg, who played Zuckerberg.

Even though the film covered the messy foundation on which Facebook was conceived and created, it’s been 13 years. There are so many new challenges, obstacles, and ethical considerations that can be examined in a sequel. What’s more, Facebook has made a ton of acquisitions during this time, including and especially Instagram and WhatsApp. It could also cover the rebrand to Meta back in 2021.

Sometimes sequels bomb, but as long as Sorkin returns for the script, Fincher returns to direct, and Eisenberg reprises his role as the lead character, there’s a chance that it may succeed.
