The next entry in the award-winning The Lord of the Rings film/TV franchise, The War of the Rohirrim, has had its release date pushed back. This animated motion picture is coming out on December 13, 2024, according to an article published in Deadline. It represents an eight-month delay from its original date of April 12, 2024.

As part of a presentation on new dates for upcoming films, the New Line division of Warner Bros. made the announcement. Other delayed projects include Dune: Part II, which is now coming in 2024, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is now coming in April 2024.

Assuming the new date holds in place, The War of the Rohirrim will now debut on the same day as Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.

Directed by anime producer Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), the film is set over 150 prior to the events of the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Protagonist Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, is voiced by Brian Cox.

The movie description reads, “A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg–a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep…Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Hera, Helm’s daughter, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.”

Miranda Otto will be reprising her role as Eowyn as the voice for the same character in The War of the Rohirrim by serving as narrator. Other stars include Gaia Wise as Hera. Phillipa Boyens is serving as an executive producer. Finally, many of the artists who worked on the original film trilogy such as Alan Lee, John Howe, and Richard Taylor are lending their talents to this new anime.
