Terminator: The Anime Series has been announced for Netflix during Geeked Week 2023. The first teaser trailer has officially dropped.
This production is part of a joint effort by Netflix and Skydance to create a take on the classic sci-fi franchise originally created by film director James Cameron. Although not much was revealed regarding the new anime series, it appears to be set before Judgment Day (Aug. 29, 1997).
The show was first announced in 2021, and according to executive producer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, Project Power), it will “approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations, and has real guts.” Production I.G., the veteran studio known for Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, and other popular shows, is adapting the series to animation.
The biggest issue fans have had with the action sci-fi franchise since Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1997) is a failure to continue the story in a meaningful way without milking sequels to sell movie tickets. Not even James Cameron himself was able to top his own work despite writing Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).
However, the best fans have gotten since the second film is debatably Terminator Resistance, a game that limits its plot to the confines of the first two films and adds to the world really well.
