Tears of the Kingdom Will Not Get DLC, Nintendo Says

Nintendo has revealed it has no plans to make DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK) and is instead moving forward with the next entry. This is according to recent statements by series producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. The next entry will be a “new experience.”

Zelda: TOTK is the second brand-new Legend of Zelda game to come out on Nintendo Switch, and serves as the sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild (BOTW). Although it is now a full-fledged sequel, TOTK was originally intended to be DLC for BOTW but got too big in scope that the developers needed to have it stand on its own.

Because TOTK is essentially a DLC so massive it became its own game, and the fact that it uses an overhauled version of Hyrule from BOTW that had been tapped dry, the developers want to move on.

Still, BOTW had bucketloads of post-launch DLC which included new gameplay modes like The Master Trials and The Champions Ballad, with tons of new story content packed in. Of course, TOTK has done insanely well since its release and is now considered the second biggest Nintendo launch of all time, just after Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
