At the Xbox Showcase 2023, Ubisoft unveiled Star Wars Outlaws, the first truly open-world game set in the galaxy far, far away. It is set for release in 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The game was initially announced in January 2021 under development by Massive Entertainment and officially licensed by Lucasfilm Games. Up to 10 minutes of gameplay footage was shown off as the Ubisoft Forward presentation, and the game is built on the Snowdrop game engine.

Featuring a female protagonist named Kay Vess (Humberly González), an outlaw scoundrel with her companion Nix (Dee Bradley Baker), the story focuses on one of the biggest heists in the history of the Outer Rim.

In terms of the timeline, Star Wars Outlaws is confirmed to occur between Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. This period was chosen because the setting created the ideal environment where an “established or rookie scoundrel [could] cut their teeth,” according to creative director Julian Gerighty. Here, the Rebel Alliance has not sufficiently developed, criminal syndicates are gathering strength, and the Galactic Empire is tightening its grip.

Star Wars Outlaws is helmed by Mathias Karlson (game director), Julian Gerighty (creative director), Nikki Foy (lead writer), and Navid Khavari (narrative director).
