Sonic Superstars Is 2.5D Side-Scrolling Mayhem, With Co-Op

Sonic Superstars, the next major title in the franchise, will allow you to breeze through stages in 2.5D in glorious co-op with friends. It is being co-developed by Arzest and Sonic Team, set to release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in late 2023.

This game feels like the New Super Mario Bros. Wii of Sonic. A callback to the early days of the blue blur on Sega Genesis, Sonic Superstars is a modernization of an old formula that works wonders to this very day.

The recent trailer shows off cooperative gameplay with up to four playable characters, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy (in her much-appreciated classic aesthetic).

While the main campaign is confirmed to support local multiplayer with up to four people who, like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and join in and leave at any time, the game will also be receiving a player versus player (PvP) mode that can take place locally or online.

It also has levels in which the characters transition from bright, shiny 3D graphics into a retro 16-bit style where everything looks digitized and highly pixelated.

Like all other Sonic games, you’ll collect rings and power-ups while enjoying exciting bonus stages, and boss battles taking on Eggman.
