Despite being a staple gameplay element of both 2D and 3D hedgehog adventures for so long, the ability to spin dash in Sonic Frontiers was missing when the game launched. However, as part of the 2023 content update roadmap, SEGA has now introduced it into the latest title.
How to Unlock the Spin Dash
The spin dash allows Sonic to move rapidly in a hunched-down ball form. This helps with rapid traversal, and combat, and can even be used while airborne. Unfortunately, even after installing the free DLC, the spin dash is not unlocked by default.
To unlock the ability to spin dash in Sonic Frontiers, you have to complete all Action Chain Challenges with S Rank in the game. These are time trial objectives that have you amassing a high score within a certain time limit.
How to Complete All Action Chain Challenges
Action Chain Challenges are new timed missions scattered across most of the maps of Starfall Islands. You can easily filter for them when searching for the proper icons.
To start an Action Chain Challenge, run near the mission post, then make a full 360 Cyloop circle around the post. This will begin the objective on a 3-second countdown. After that, it’s up to you to score.
How to Get S Rank On All Action Chain Challenges
You will receive a rank based on your score when the time runs out on an Action Chain Challenge. The minimum score for S Rank varies for each mission, so you will need to do some trial and error before figuring out the exact number.
The best strategy for winning Action Chain Challenges with S Rank is to quickly gather gold orbs that appear as you traverse the world during the objective. These stack as score multipliers, giving you substantially more points as you run around.

Once you’ve amassed the highest possible score multiplier from gathering the golden orbs, some of the best activities you can engage in to earn fast points include fighting enemies, collecting rings, and performing stunts in the air. However, you will amass points from doing every kind of activity with the multiplier active, including running and grinding.

First, unlock the ability. Then, simply press the following button combination depending on your system to use the spin dash.
