Ridley Scott, director and producer, has revealed he is at work on a new Alien film for 20th Century Studios, thanks to the massive success of Alien: Romulus. There is a good chance that it is going to be the direct sequel to Romulus.
A THR interview reports that Scott casually dropped the news that this was happening with no further details. The news broke a week ago that 20th Century Studios was busy working on an idea for Alien: Romulus 2 with Fede Álvarez to return to direct. It seems certain that these films are the same.
Scott noted earlier in the interview that he is frustrated with his lack of ownership of both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises over time, which he blames on the former management of his company.
“I should have locked them up, as [Steven] Spielberg did with Jurassic, and everything he does, and James Cameron has done with what he has,” he said. “I resurrected a dead Alien [franchise] with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, and we should have rejoined the ownership right then, and we didn’t, because someone was careless.”
The Alien films have become incredibly popular since the debut film from 1979. Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection proceeded without him, although he has returned to work on more recent films like Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, and now Alien: Romulus.
Alien: Romulus, which was produced by Scott, was released on August 12, 2024, to a global box office of $350 million. It is getting an official release across modern physical and digital media, as well as VHS.
