Poketsume is the first live-action Pokémon TV series, and it just got a trailer. The premise for this Japanese drama is not quite what you may expect.
According to Serebii, Poketsume is not set in reality quite like Detective Pikachu. Furthermore, it does not reimagine the world of Pokémon in real life. Rather, it focuses on a story around a Japanese office worker who gets inspired by her adventures playing Pokémon Red.
The main character, Madoka Akagi, used to play Pokémon Red with siblings while growing up in the Kanto region. Some twenty years down the line, she moved to Tokyo to work for a marketing agency called ADventure. The job doesn’t quite meet her expectations, as she’s eventually assigned a stressful project that will impact the future of her company. It’s around this time that she receives a care package from her mother, which includes her original Game Boy Pocket and the game Pokémon Red. She understands there is more overlap between her real life and the digital adventure.
This is one of several live-action projects based on Pokémon that are in the works. Variety reported on a potential series that may arrive on Netflix. In addition, Netflix showed off a motion-based Pokémon series called Pokémon Concierge. We are also likely going to get a sequel to the Detective Pikachu movie.
Poketsume is set to air on TV Tokyo beginning October 19, 2023. There are currently no confirmations regarding subbed or dubbed versions of the show.
