Initially, the level cap of player trainers in Pokémon GO was 40. However, this was eventually increased to 50 in November 2020. There is speculation that this will soon increase to 60 in 2023.

Leveling is the primary measurement of progression throughout your journey as a player in Pokémon GO. The higher your level, the more items you can use, and the higher Combat Power (CP) your Pokémon can be.
You progress levels in Pokémon GO by acquiring XP (experience) points.
Lucky Egg
No matter which activity you do while playing Pokémon GO, always make sure to use a Lucky Egg to help level up fast. This item grants you double XP for 30 minutes.
Lucky Eggs can be purchased in the Shop using Coins. They can be purchased individually or in bulk. You also earn them as a reward for hitting certain levels.

Double XP Events are limited-time opportunities to earn double the amount of XP for activities in Pokémon GO. If you combine this with a Lucky Egg, you will earn 4x the amount of XP for an activity!
Fastest Ways To Level Up
Mass Raiding
By completing Raids and the more challenging Legendary Raids, you will be able to farm XP faster than the majority of other activities in the game.
The most amount of XP you can earn with raiding in the shortest amount of time is by completing a Legendary Raid with a Lucky Egg activated during a Double XP event for a total of 40,000 XP.
Unfortunately, this method is the most expensive and requires lots of items to do on a regular basis. You will require Battle Passes to enter the raids, Revives, and Potions to keep your team afloat.
Mass Friending
Increasing your friendship levels in your list is one of the most effective methods to level up in Pokémon GO. If you have a Lucky Egg activated during a double XP event and manage to reach Best Friends with someone all at the same time, you will receive a whopping 400,000 XP!
You can increase your friendship levels with friends through interactions. The three main types of interactions include the following:
- Sending/Receiving Gifts
- Trading together
- Raiding together
Friendship levels are determined by how many days of interactions you have with a trainer on your friend list. They rank as follows:
- Good Friends (♥) – 1 day of interacting
- Great Friends (♥♥) – 7 days of interacting
- Ultra Friends (♥♥♥) – 30 days of interacting
- Best Friends (♥♥♥♥) – 90 days of interacting
Mass Catching
Catching Pokémon is the primary gameplay in GO, and you can set yourself up to easily farm XP and progress your Dex quickly. With the help of a Lucky Egg, here are the rates:
- Curve Ball bonus (20 XP)
- Nice Throw bonus (20 XP)
- Pokémon Flees (50 XP)
- First Throw bonus (100 XP)
- Great Throw bonus (100 XP)
- Excellent Throw bonus (200 XP)
- Catch a Pokémon (200 XP)
- Catch 100th Pokémon of a species (200 XP)
- Add a new Pokémon to your Dex (1000 XP)
- Daily Catch Streak, days 1-6 (1000 XP)

Position yourself in an area, preferably with lots of Poké-stops to spin, and put down an Incense. Only one Incense may be active at a time.
There are three types of Incense to use in Pokémon GO:
- Incense
- Daily Adventure Incense
- The Coin Bag
Incense
Regular Incense can be acquired from spinning Pokéstops or bought from the Shop for 40 coins each / 250 for a bulk of 8. It lures additional wild Pokémon wherever you are for 60 minutes.
Daily Adventure Incense
Daily Adventure Incense is a free Incense that trainers can use once per day. The item is automatically added to the Item Bag at 12:00am local time. If you have 30 or fewer Balls spread across Poké Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls, you will be granted 30 Poké Balls when you activate this Incense. It lures additional wild Pokémon wherever you are for 15 minutes.
The Coin Bag
The Coin Bag is a special type of Incense that will increase the rate you will encounter the Coin Chest Pokémon wherever you go for 30 minutes.

Levels 1-40
You will progress your trainer Level up to 40 by doing any activity in the game to acquire XP. That includes catching, battling, raiding, PvP, opening gifts, hatching eggs, walking, evolving, and more.

The requirements to progress from Levels 41-50 are more specific. Info from Niantic and dataminers from the Silph Road detail the individual challenges that go beyond simply acquiring XP.
