Sony’s Remote Play handheld, Project Q, is officially called PlayStation Portal. It will cost $200 and remotely connect to PS5 consoles via Wi-Fi.
First announced at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the device known as PlayStation Portal is essentially a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen sitting in the middle of it. It is capable of producing 1080p resolution at 60 fps.
When it launches later this year, the device is set to cost $199.99 / €219.99 / £199.99. Although it appears like a traditional gaming handheld in the vein of the Nintendo Switch, it can only stream games from a PS5 console.
Sony recently published a post on its blog saying that “PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house.”
The official description indicates that PlayStation Portal is intended for Remote Play only, and is unable to provide access to cloud streaming of games via PlayStation Plus Premium. This is different from Microsoft’s streaming device known as Backbone, which is capable of streaming games from Xbox Game Pass and NVIDIA GeForce Now.
“PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported…Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible,” says Sony.
