During The Game Awards 2023, Hideo Kojima announced his next title. Confirming the rumors, the game is called OD, and it’s being developed with Xbox. Kojima is collaborating with Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), on the game.
Featuring performances by actors Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and Udo Kier, Peele has said it is “unlike any other game; it’s going to be crazy.”
Kojima Productions will be taking advantage of the cloud gaming technology of Xbox Game Studios to create an “immersive” game that has never been seen before. This was previously hinted at by Kojima himself when he said one of his next upcoming titles was “almost like a new medium.“
Essentially, the experience “is a game, but at the same time a movie”, in the words of Kojima.
Games that feel like interactive movies aren’t new ideas, as most especially seen with the library of titles from developer Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human). However, the way they are executed offers room for infinite possibility.
The official description of OD reads, “A Hideo Kojima game, OD explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear–while blurring the boundaries of gaming and film.”
As of the time of this post, there is no confirmed release date. OD represents one of at least two titles in development at Kojima Productions, with the other being Death Stranding 2.
