Nintendo is keeping the already low-cost Switch and the even cheaper Switch Lite at the same price, as confirmed in the face of Sony deciding to increase the price of their PlayStation 5 across most countries worldwide.
In a brief statement to Eurogamer, Nintendo has claimed there are “no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware.”
According to Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, although the company “…cannot comment on pricing strategies, we currently have no plans to change the price of our hardware due to inflation or increased procurement costs in each country,” and that strategies related to the pricing of hardware will continue “…through careful and continued deliberations.”
This is a nod to a similar statement recently shared by Microsoft, in which they claimed no price hikes would appear for the current generation of consoles, including the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S.
To aid in issues related to semiconductor shortages and shipping, Nintendo is responding by decreasing the size of the packaging. Reducing the cardboard box by 20% will support the bottom line of the company through the use of fewer materials.
Keeping the Nintendo Switch at the same price point means that all three variations will stay fixed at the following rates:
- Nintendo Switch (standard edition): $299.99
- Nintendo Switch Lite: $199.99
- Nintendo Switch OLED: $349.99
