Nintendo Introducing 18+ N64 Switch Online App In Japan For Rare Titles

Nintendo will soon be rolling out an 18+ variant of the Nintendo Switch Online app for N64 Games exclusively in Japan. This new app, debuting on November 30, will include Rare’s Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007, only the latter of which came out for Western audiences.

The decision to create a separate application for mature titles is the byproduct of the unique rating system in Japan. In the country, GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini are classified under the ‘Z’ rating, meaning content suitable for adults only and requires an age verification of 18+ for purchase. This ensures Nintendo protects underage users from accessing or viewing these kinds of games.

An 18+ NSO app for N64 games is a solution to comply with Japanese regulations and age restrictions. Furthermore, it explains why GoldenEye 007 saw a delayed release in Japan compared to the Western launch. At the moment, Western subscribers to NSO will need to wait until December for Jet Force Gemini.
