BioWare, the developer of the popular sci-fi RPG series known as Mass Effect, has confirmed the next entry will be following in the footsteps of its predecessors and focus on single-player.
Although the Canadian video game company is currently at work on the next major entry for Dragon Age, General Manager Gary McKay briefly stated that the other team is “envisioning what the future holds for a new single-player Mass Effect game.”
The fifth core entry in the Mass Effect franchise had a teaser trailer dropped in 2020, with very subtle hints as to the game’s plot.
For one, there is enough evidence that Dr. Liara T’Soni and Commander Shepard will be returning to the franchise. This alone likely confirms the story will take place in the Milky Way galaxy once again, and, despite what the player may have chosen for their ending to Mass Effect 3, we will see the returning presence of the Geth.
On the other hand, the most recent entry in the series, Mass Effect: Andromeda, was released in 2017. Unlike the first three games, this one took place in the Andromeda galaxy. Sadly, due to heavy development constraints on the studio, as more time was dedicated to finishing Anthem (2018), the critical reception of Andromeda was not well-received.
Despite its struggles in the past decade, Mass Effect is considered one of the greatest and most beautifully written franchises in gaming history, with a story-rich setting.
In the coming weeks, fans will also be celebrating the return of the annual November 7 (N7 Day) celebration, which may have more news and updates to come.
