LEGO video games have always been popular, but in recent years, they’ve made a big comeback. Instead of recreating famous franchises inside of the LEGO universe, the highly anticipated LEGO 2K Drive is an attempt at a completely original experience. It combines everything you love about Mario Kart, Burnout Paradise, and various open-world games in an incredibly exciting package.
Similar to classic kart games like Crash Team Racing, the main story mode of LEGO 2K Drive has players driving around an environment composed of various biomes. Of course, with modern technology, these environments are far larger with a lot more to see and do.
Each of the various areas on the world map in LEGO 2K Drive includes garages (comparable to camps or bases) that offer fast-travel checkpoints, stunt humps, races, and other fun activities. The majority of them are integrated directly into the open world with no loading screen to bypass. Simply drive near the location of an objective to get started.
Driving in the LEGO 2K Drive game feels more grounded than other racers you may have played in the past, with each vehicle having solid weight and gripping the road in a believable, though cartoony way.
What’s more, vehicles in LEGO 2K Drive extend beyond traditional cars. Landscapes often include massive water structures in addition to off-road grounds. Because your car is made of a bunch of LEGO pieces, the vehicle will instantly reshape itself to match the current terrain. This means you can easily roam the streets in hot rods but quickly swap to an ATV when driving off-road, and a boat when taking a dive in a body of water.
LEGO 2K Drive encourages the destruction of the environment as you maneuver it, integrating bricks into the gameplay to achieve a sense of freedom. Smashing NPC vehicles and LEGO structures shatters objects into thousands of pieces to charge up your boost.
All story missions and open-world objectives in LEGO 2K Drive have a similar variety. You can be jumping off-road for a quick time travel in the water, or playing red-light green-light in a booby-trapped car that will explode if you don’t get to the destination on time, or facing robots firing EMP blasts. You may even discover missions that have permanent effects on the environment upon completion.

The writing of the story for LEGO 2K Drive feels in line with what you would expect when watching the LEGO Movie. However, the humor does not hinder the gameplay, and you’ll find the best lines delivered when exploring and driving. Each of the characters from the announcers to the villain to the mentor has their own unique personalities and quirks.
Controls in LEGO 2K Drive are incredibly intuitive which makes it a joy to simply wander around. Not only can you drift, but there’s a specific button designed for jumps and quick turns alike.
LEGO 2K Drive is set to release on May 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
