Final Fantasy VII executive producer Yoshinori Kitase has expressed hope that the franchise will continue after completing the Remake Project trilogy with Part 3.
In Japan, the official Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Ultimania was released, which expands the game’s story and lore while providing some commentary from the developers as well as art.
Final Fantasy VII Remake, initially released in 2020, represented Part 1 of the trilogy of games designed to fully remake the classic JRPG for modern audiences. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, initially released in 2024, represents Part 2.
Right now, though, Part 3 needs to conclude development before Square Enix can continue thinking about new installments in the franchise.
However, for die-hard fans who want some original content, the mobile gacha game Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, released in 2023, helps expand the world with additional stories and characters.
No matter if Final Fantasy VII‘s world continues with core entries, it is unlikely that Kitase will remain a part of the franchise due to his age. In addition, Kitase is trying to provide a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy of Remake games. According to Aitai Japan CEO Audrey, “he wants to finish the trilogy on a positive note without leaving behind any unfinished business, but that’s just his own personal opinion on the matter.”
Kitase served as director on multiple core entry Final Fantasy titles, including VI, VII, and VIII. Since then, he has more often held producer roles as he moved up the chain of authority at Square Enix. His tenure has remained legendary since 1991. Of course, everything must come to an end at some point.
