Jack Black is joining the cast of “Minecraft”, a live-action feature film adaptation of the top-selling video game.

In addition, the movie will include Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones), Emma Myers (Wednesday), and Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple). Production is set to begin very soon in New Zealand.

The project is being directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) who previously collaborated with Black on Nacho Libre (2006). It is being backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures and is slated to open in theaters on April 4, 2025.

As of the time of this post, it’s unclear what kind of plot the Minecraft movie will be about, or who will be writing the screenplay. A film adaptation of the game has been in development for years, with Peter Sollet, Rob McElhenney, and Shawn Levy all in talks to direct at one point.

Minecraft is the greatest-selling game of all time, initially developed by indie creator Markus “Notch” Persson and published by Mojang Studios, who sold the IP to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion.
