How to Summon and Switch Companions in SWTOR

In this guide, you’ll learn how to summon and switch companions in Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR).

Companion characters in SWTOR are exactly what they sound like, allies that follow you around on your adventures and assume the role of either Tank, DPS, or Heals. They can be summoned, dismissed, and switched at almost any time. Note that you can only have a single companion active with you at any time.

You will receive your first companion around level 10, depending on where you are in your main class story.

Summon Last Active Companion

The easiest way to summon a companion in SWTOR (if one is not with you already) is to click the icon located on the bottom left-hand corner of the UI by default. This will summon your last active companion.

Summon and/or Switch a Specific Companion

You can summon a specific companion from your list of acquired followers by using the Companions and Contacts window. This can be easily accessed by pressing [N] on your keyboard.

After opening Companions and Contacts, highlight the specific companion you wish to summon. Then click the action button to the right of their level icon. Note that some companions may be listed in this window but cannot be summoned due to story or chapter phases.

Follow the same process if you already have an active companion out and want to switch to a different companion.

How to Dismiss Companions in SWTOR

You can choose to dismiss your active companion when you want to play solo.

If you have an active companion summoned, you can simply right-click their character portrait, which should be located in the bottom left-hand corner of the UI by default. Select the option that says Dismiss Companion.
