Depending on the cause, there are several techniques for fixing “Temporarily Hostile” NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3. This guide lists them.
If you discover an NPC has “Temporarily Hostile”, you can choose between fleeing from combat or knocking them out. After taking a rest, they should be back up and non-hostile.
However, there are other reasons why characters may be hostile and attack the player.
How to Stop NPCs from Attacking You in BG3
There a multiple reasons why NPCs may be attacking the player. Here are the ways you can resolve the issue depending on the cause.
Reload Save
In a choice-based RPG, you will need to savescum like crazy. When NPCs are ripping your party apart, it helps to reload a save before the encounter and reconsider the approach.
Stop Using Charm Person, Friends, and other Enchantment Spells
Although these powers are quite useful in dialogue checks, they can cause reputation problems with NPCs. Use them only for extreme circumstances, or when you don’t plan to see an NPC again.
Caught Stealing
NPCs may suddenly aggro without an apparent reason because you may have been caught stealing. When you take an item without being spotted, things may go badly if they find their item is missing and you are nearby.
You may have the chance to pass a dialogue check to resolve this issue, but this is not guaranteed.
Non-Lethal Attacks Bug
In some instances, players are finding that non-lethal attacks in Baldur’s Gate 3 are not working as they should. This bug can appear in instances where hostile enemies knock you out, making the game believe that the NPC is dead.
The non-lethal attacks passive ability is toggled on to ensure you do not kill characters that are innocent, charmed, dominated, or enthralled.
Therefore, you should only touch the toggle for non-lethal attacks unless enemies have the “temporarily hostile” condition.
At this time, there seem to be issues with regular fights that have hostile enemies the player does not want to kill. Knocking them out using non-lethal attacks still seems to allow for the chance that the enemy is marked as dead. Other times, the quest tracker may say that the character had died despite surviving the fight with 1 HP.
