Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy are short challenges spread throughout the open world of the game. They appear as feather icons on the map and reward players with extra inventory slots for gear to carry more items to wear or sell.
The first Merlin Trial will become available to you during the quest Trials of Merlin, with Nora Treadwell introducing you to the concept.
In order to activate a Merlin Trial, you will need to stand on the circle where the puzzle is meant to begin and use Mallowsweet leaves. These Mallowsweet leaves can be purchased in Hogsmeade at the Magic Neep, or you can plant seeds and grow them in the Room of Requirement.
Types of Merlin Trials
Most Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy require specific spells to solve. All of the puzzles fall under one of seven categories.
- Platform jumping
- Dragging objects
- Lighting torches
- Destroying orbs
- Repairing broken statues
- Flipping stones
- Lumos moths
All Merlin Trials
Merlin Trial: Lighting Torches
Need spell: Confringo or Incendio
Simply light the torches surrounding the Merlin Trial with Confringo or Incendio. They will begin to sink into the ground, and all torches need to be lit before this happens. Try finding their positions first, then light them from tallest to shortest. We recommend Confringo as it allows you to light them from a distance.
Merlin Trial: Dragging Objects
Need spell: Accio or Wingardium Leviosa
There are two types of stones you will need to move, depending on the Merlin Trial. One type is a small set of spheres that can be easily dragged to their designated spots. The other type is a larger single sphere that can be pushed or pulled into a nest hole. Regardless, both Accio and Wingardium Leviosa will help you solve these Merlin Trials.
Merlin Trial: Repairing Broken Statues
Need spell: Reparo
These trials have you running around looking for broken statues spread around the area. Use Revelio to easily locate them, then when you get near them, use Reparo to fix them and complete the puzzle.
Merlin Trial: Destroying Orbs
Need spell: Confringo or Bombara
This trial requires the destruction of orbs sitting on top of small pillars. Use either Confringo or Bombara to easily do so from a distance after locating them with Revelio.
Merlin Trial: Lumos Moths
Need spell: Lumos
You will be surrounded by hollow cubes containing open holes. Nearby are floating green moths that you need to use Lumos on to start following you. Simply bring them back to the cubes to light them up and complete the puzzle.
Merlin Trial: Flipping Stones
Need spell: Flipendo
This trial is more difficult as it requires the use of Flipendo to rotate cubes stacked on pillars, which will flip based on the specific side you are facing the pillars. The symbols on the cubes must all match vertically in order to finish this challenge.
Merlin Trial: Platform Jumping
Need spell: N/A
All you need to do is successfully jump on every single platform (without touching any part of the ground until you finish). It helps to start with the highest platform and jump your way down.
