Avalanche Software’s extended gameplay showcase confirms that players will have more than 20 usable combat spells throughout their journey in Hogwarts Legacy.

The initial reveal for the open-world Harry Potter RPG came out in 2020, with fans having a lot to learn about the game ever since. Bits and pieces of the gameplay were shown off by Avalanche, including small clips of the dynamic combat system.

Now that the player HUD has been revealed with the most recent showcase, fans can expect to be able to slot up to 16 combat spells at a time. This interface includes a diamond-shaped list of spells mapped to four separate buttons. The initial four spells include Accio, Lumos, Wingardium Levoisa, and the Severing Charm Diffindo.

Players can utilize a basic attack spell by tapping R2 on console versions. However, holding R2 lets them utilize four different spells at a time. We still don’t know how switching spells will turn out, but Alan Tew, the Game’s Director, has stated that players can unlock multiple spell diamonds.

Furthermore, each equipped spell has a cooldown time, which prevents spamming and the ability to rely on a single spell throughout a fight. In terms of defense, players and enemies can use several defensive charms, such as Protego. To shield themselves from ongoing spells, players can push the Triangle button at the correct time to deflect spells. Others, like Accio, can break through particular types of shields.

Outside of combat, Hogwarts students will be able to learn “Essential Spells.” These non-combat abilities are useful in particular contexts such as sidequests, exploration, and story missions.

While fans could only see certain spells in action, it’s going to feel like playing an MMO with the ability to use up to 16 at a time.

Right now, the best Harry Potter game available to check out is none other than LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and Years 5-7. If you’re interested, read our cheat codes guide.
