Hideo Kojima’s Upcoming Xbox and Sony Games Affected by VG Actors’ Strike

hideo kojima's games affected by strike

Hideo Kojima has recently discussed how the ongoing video game actors’ strike has affected production on his Xbox game and upcoming action espionage game for Sony.

In an X post, Kojima wrote that his production company was forced to suspend actor filming and scanning for OD during the second half of 2024 after SAG-AFTRA’s video game actors’ strike began in July.

Similarly, the casting for Kojima’s highly anticipated “action espionage” title Physint was suspended due to the strike. Furthermore, he added that he desires to resume production in 2025.

Just like the Writers Strike of 2023, SAG-AFTRA video game voice actors accuse gaming companies of refusing to meet their demands regarding AI. Negotiations over a new contract started in October 2022.

It remains to be seen what this means for both Physint and OD, with both titles currently without a release window. Each are video game / film hybrids, with Jordan Peele (Nope, Get Out), collaborating with Kojima on OD. Physint was announced during a broadcast for the Sony State of Play, suggesting it may come out on PlayStation 6.

In the meantime, Kojima is busy at work on Death Stranding 2, which is due to release this year, in addition to a live-action Death Stranding film with A24. Kojima also teased that “other adaptations” are underway in his X post.

The SAG-AFTRA strike is affecting many more titles outside of OD and Physint. Last month, it was confirmed that Activision had to recast certain members of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 after fans noticed that many beloved Zombies characters had new voices in-game. Activision said, “We respect the personal choice of these performers. Out of respect for all parties, we won’t add new commentary about the ongoing negotiations with SAG-AFTRA. We look forward to a mutually beneficial outcome as soon as possible.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is not part of the strike because it was in development prior to July 2024 when the strike began. Yet, as suggested by Activision’s statement, the voice actors may have decided against signing additional contracts in solidarity with union members.
