Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio has now received an impressive full trailer. Although audiences got an initial glimpse at the upcoming movie over the course of the summer, fans can now see what Mark Gustafson, legendary animator, and Del Toro have planned for the classic character of fiction.
This new film falls in line with Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 tale and derives less from the Disney animated film. While there are some crossovers, the trailers give viewers an upfront notice that this isn’t quite the story you’re familiar with.
With a script by Patrick McHale (Over The Garden Wall), the project dates back to as early as 2008, originally scheduled for release in 2013. Unfortunately, it went into development limbo.
McHale was tasked with co-writing the script in 2017. However, the production was suspended late that year as there was no financing to be provided. After the Netflix acquisition, the production was revived in 2018.
The film’s cast includes Ewan McGregor (Sebastian J. Cricket), Gregory Mann (Pinnochio), David Bradley Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, Burn Gorman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Tilda Swinton (Wood Sprite).
A new character debuting in the film, Count Volpe, is portrayed by Christoph Waltz. Volpe mixes the fantasy of Mangiafuoco from the first Pinocchio and The Fox and the Cat.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is coming to Netflix on December 9, 2022, and is playing in select theaters today.
