Giancarlo Esposito thinks Gustavo Fring, his character from Breaking Bad, should get the Better Call Saul treatment with a spin-off.
In an interview with Variety, Esposito affirmed he would reprise the role of the iconic meth kingpin if creator Vince Gilligan signed on for another series. What’s more, Esposito has a ton of ideas for a prequel that focuses on Fring’s rise through the Chilean underworld.
“Should there be [another spin-off]? I think eventually there should be, and there might be,” Esposito said. “I have a lot of premises I like to push. If I was talking to [creator] Vince Gilligan right now I would tell him: the rise of Gus.”
As of now, Gilligan is tied up with his schedule working on an untitled show for Apple TV+.
“Wait a few years — he’s doing another show — then come back to me, because the rise of Gus is interesting. To find out what are the pieces that made up Gustovo Fring, and where did he come from in terms of his relationship to the hierarchy in Chile, would be very interesting, and to see his family background.”
Gus Fring is a legendary drug dealer in disguise, using his fast-food business, Los Pollos Hermanos, as a front for his operations.
Breaking Bad is considered one of the greatest dramas in the history of serial television, rivaling the all-star quality of series like The Sopranos and The Wire. It ran from 2008 to 2013, and the prequel spin-off Better Call Saul ran from 2015 to 2022. El Camino, the sequel film starring Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, was released in 2019.
