Error 516 happens when players attempt to save their file in Baldur’s Gate 3 but fail to do so. Learn how to fix this error.
How to Fix Failed to Save Game in Baldur’s Gate 3 (Error Code 516)
Error 516 occurs when you do not have enough storage space on your system to create new save files. The best way to fix the problem is to close the game and clear up room for new saves on your system. You can also change the root directory of your saves to another storage device on your system that has space.
Clear Space
For most users, the game saves are located on the C Drive, specifically at the following location:
- C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur’s Gate 3
Ensure that the C Drive has enough space for new saves you create starting now. If you do not want to clean up room on your C Drive, you can also delete older saves that you no longer plan to reload from. Restart the game and attempt to save again.
Change Save Location
If you are unable to free up space on your C Drive but have additional drives on your system with room to store saved files, you can migrate the save directory. For example, if you want to move the files over to:
- D:\Larian Studios\BG3\New Save Location
Open the Command Prompt (Administrator) then run the following command:
- mklink /d “C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur’s Gate 3” “D:\Larian Studios\BG3\New Save Location”
Using these fixes should correct the Error 516 (Failed to Save Game) error in Baldur’s Gate 3. Check out our guides hub for Baldur’s Gate 3 for more tutorials.
