Dragon Ball DAIMA Retcons Majin Buu’s Origins

dragon ball daima retcons majin buu's origins

Dragon Ball DAIMA proves it is not afraid to make heavy revisions to the franchise’s age-old lore with its latest retcon, dealing with Majin Buu. In addition to changing what fans understand about the character, the reveal of who Buu’s creator is has opened the door for a new villain to take center stage in the latter half of DAIMA.

DAIMA confirms neither Bibidi or Babidi had a hand in the creation of Majin Buu.

As fans previously knew, Majin Buu is a magical genie-like being created by Bibidi, the “father” of Babidi. Akira Toriyama, the creator of the series, suggested in past interviews that Bibidi was not actually the creator of Buu, but that Buu always existed and was merely woken up by Bibidi. This makes Buu a primordial force of evil predating most of the universe. Thanks to DAIMA, neither of these explanations is true, and there was a third party involved in the creation of Buu.

At the behest of Bibidi, Majin Buu was, in fact, created by a Demon Realm witch whose name is Marba. Unlike Bibidi and Babidi, Marba is actually still alive.

In-universe and across the fandom, it is widely believed that Bibidi created Buu, with only Arinsu knowing the truth. During episode 8 of Dragon Ball DAIMA, it was revealed that Arinsu was present during the fight against Buu, collecting a sample of his flesh from one of the occasions in which Buu was destroyed and forced to regenerate. Arinsu met with the mysterious witch, offering that piece of Buu. Marba concocts some kind of new potion, using the essence of Majin Buu within the recipe, hoping to gain a fraction of Buu’s power.

Marba may have the power to create a being greater than or equal to the power of Buu.

The witch bears the Majin “M”, which is observed on the clothes of Bibidi, Babidi, and Buu, and later on the forehead of Vegeta after falling under the control of Bibidi. It appears as if the symbol may actually be hers instead of Bibidi’s, and serves as a sign of that which she created. Although Marba insists that Buu’s insane level of power was a fluke on her part, she seems determined to create something more powerful than Buu, which would of course pose a grave threat to the Demon Realm and the worlds beyond it.

Just because the alteration of Buu’s creator is not a big deal, the fact that the creator is still alive and able to create new entities on part with the power of Majin Buu is a big deal. It also serves to make Bibidi and Babidi look less impressive, as they were barely able to control Buu. Now it seems they didn’t even create him. The Buu saga makes Bibidi and Babidi into these legendary wizards, but looking back now, they don’t come across this way.

In the 8th episode, Marba is shown concocting a potion that implies the creation of a new Majin, one more easily controlled. If it has the essence of Buu inside of it, it could be as powerful or even more powerful than Buu. It appears as though Arinsu might be the actual villain that Goku and the rest of the Z-Fighters need to deal with, as she has had these plans in place for quite some time. It is not necessarily clear what she is planning, but using this new Majin to take power is likely.

Theoretically, Arinsu could use the new Majin to seize the Dragon Balls once all the Tamagami are defeated. With Glorio acting as her agent, she seems to consider that the three-star Dragon Ball is already under her control, despite it still being in the hands of Goku. With each of the Dragon Balls are her disposal, Arinsu could make her wishes come true and take over the Demon Realm. By having the Majin at her side, she would be unstoppable.

This would make the new Majin the final enemy of DAIMA. When Goku and Vegeta fought Majin Buu the first time, they essentially had to use everything they had to take the being out, but if there happens to be a new enemy that’s even more powerful, it will be exciting to see how much power they can muster while still small. It would be a more spectacular brawl than with Gomah, the Demon King himself, and force Goku and Vegeta to once again reach new heights.
