In the wake of anticipation for the sequel to the most successful movie in cinema history, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water finally saw its world premiere in London. Initial reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics again in awe of Cameron’s cutting-edge visual effects and limitless imagination.
Avatar: The Way of Water continues the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), parents that have to protect their family from a brand new threat coming to the world of Pandora. The cast also includes Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and Sigourney Weaver.
Even before its initial press screening, esteemed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro gave it a thumbs up, writing on Twitter that the “Avatar” sequel is “chock-full of majestic vistas and emotions at an epic, epic scale. A master at the peak of his power.”
Despite some backlash from fans during production over the three-hour and 10-minute runtime, those who saw it early did not complain about the extended length. Furthermore, Cameron affirmed his decision to keep it this long, as people easily binge hours of television.
Avatar: The Way of Water officially releases in theatres on Friday, December 16, 2022. It is the sequel to the original Avatar, which came out in 2009.
