NCSoft has given fans the license to continue development for its property, City of Heroes, a classic MMORPG that shut down ages ago.
This license permits fans to host a resurrected version of the game on Homecoming, a private server.
In a statement, the team behind the server said, “We’d like to thank you all for your patience over the past few years, and we’re incredibly thrilled to announce that it’s paid off: NCSOFT has officially granted Homecoming a license to host City of Heroes.”

Furthermore, the Homecoming team assured fans that players’ account data and characters have been preserved. Even better, the development of new content is planned to continue. Finally, Homecoming will remain free, and the game will be entirely funded by donations.
Creators behind Homecoming are not demanding anyone to pay any recurring license fees or upfront charges. However, they will increase their donation targets to save money if problems arise. Although NCSoft has given the project the green light, the original developer can still request the private server be shut down at any moment.
City of Heroes lasted from 2004 until 2012. Yet, the source code was made available back in 2019, renewing interest in the game as players hosted it outside of the direct involvement of NCSoft.
