Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has blasted past all former sales records for its long-time first-person shooter franchise. The game shined when it already managed to cross $800 million in sales after only three days. Now, in a mere 10 days, Modern Warfare II has crossed $1 billion in sales.
This represents a swift return to form for a franchise that made its name on combat with weapons from both history and the present day.
Despite how impressive this may seem, it still pales in comparison to blockbusters that sent a cataclysm through the industry, such as Grand Theft Auto V (2013). Rockstar’s most successful title ever blazed past the $1 billion mark in only three days and has managed to top the charts of sales almost a decade later, with more than 100 million copies purchased.
Still, this is great news for developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision. As part of the Call of Duty: Next project, we’re also seeing the launch of Warzone 2.0 and Season 1 of each of the titles on November 16.
The game was released in a state that wasn’t quite smooth, but new series features like the surprising third-person mode have been received well.
Since launch, Activision claimed that 1 billion matches and more than 200 million hours of play-time have been recorded across all systems.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was released on October 27, 2022, and is available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
