Bungie Is Reviving The Marathon Franchise

In recent months, Insider Gaming reported that Bungie was planning a brand new game as part of its age-old Marathon IP, with a focus on PvP.

Although Bungie has always made first-person shooters, it truly began its foray into the genre with the original Marathon, released in 1994 exclusively for the Apple Pippin. Taking design elements from popular blockbusters like DOOM at the time, Marathon replaced the demons from hell by incorporating the alien sci-fi elements that Halo and Destiny would later become well known for.

According to details from Destiny Bulletin, run by Jeff Grubb, an industry insider, the project is being made in partnership with Chinese gaming company NetEase. This firm invested $100 million into Bungie in 2019, prior to the Sony acquisition.

Furthermore, the game will be an FPS experience in the authentic Bungie style, which likely means there will be no third-person options available. It is said to be an extraction-style shooter featuring three-man squads similar to Apex Legends.

Grubb continued by stating that there will be a focus on minimal queue times and zero load times as an improvement over Destiny.

The new Marathon entry will offer a highly customizable protagonist for the player. Unlike Overwatch and Apex Legends, this will not feature pre-defined heroes. However, it will likely be free-to-play as a way of competing with the current market and feature live service updates.
