After seeing great success with the Warhammer 40k universe, developer Saber Interactive is turning its eyes towards making a AAA game set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender next.
Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive have officially confirmed the news. It is being produced in collaboration with Avatar Studios, a division launched by series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko back in 2021 such that the IP could expand into other forms of media.
According to IGN, this will be “the biggest video game in franchise history,” and while details are slim right now, it has been confirmed that it will focus on an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar” and is set thousands of years in the past of the Avatar Legends universe.
Avatar tells the story of a world where humanity has learned to harness the four primal elements of nature. Benders are those who can manipulate the energies of water, earth, fire, and air through unique martial arts movements. However, there is only one capable of wielding all four elements in harmony, known as the Avatar–a being charged with maintaining the balance between spirits and people. Only one Avatar can exist at any time, and upon death, they reincarnate and start the journey over to master the elements.
For the game, Paramount and Saber says that players can expect dynamic combat, a vibrant world, and story elements both new and familiar to fans of the Avatar franchise.
“We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way,” said Doug Rosen, SVP, Games and Emerging Media at Paramount, to IGN. “Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”
This is not the first time that a game in the Avatar franchise has been produced. The most successful thus far, based on the sequel series known as The Legend of Korra, was developed by Platinum Games and released in 2014.
Meanwhile, the Avatar universe has grown steadily in recent years. A new live-action series launched on Netflix and has been renewed for several additional seasons. What’s more, an animated film titled Aang: The Last Airbender will be released in early 2026, reuniting the original show’s cast for a brand new adventure.
