Skyrim has had such incredible longevity thanks to constant re-releases. For a game that originally came out in 2011, why has it been put on new generations of systems so many times? Not only is it one of the most approachable RPGs you could ever play that appeals to gamers and those new to games, but it also has one of the strongest modding communities ever seen.
Recently, Skyrim has been recreated as an RTS with a wicked Age of Empires II mod by Grouchy_Bluejay4511, coming very soon.
On Reddit, the modder shared screenshots of the project, which includes Whiterun (the first town you visit) along with the Jarl’s home of Dragonsreach, watching over the city. There are many additional settlements that have been recreated in further detail, including Helgen, Riverwood, and Ivarstead which all surround High Hrothgar on the Throat of the World.
Even when using Age of Empires II‘s assets, which are trimmed-down models of what would be in a modern experience like Skyrim, the locations are quite recognizable. This includes Markarth, where the modder has implemented Aztec buildings that capture the unique appearance of the settlement.
In terms of how it plays, it comes across as a hybrid between an RTS and an RPG, where you can take charge of one of the holds in Skyrim as you attempt to claim dominance over the area. It also plans to include an additional 50 quests and 100 unique characters.
The mod is expected to be released on Steam Workshop on October 28.
