A Game of Thrones movie is officially in the works, says HBO. However, it is still very early in the process.
As of the time of this post, no director, writer, or cast members are attached, but Warner Bros. has been quietly at work on at least one of the sets. This was first leaked by The Hollywood Reporter, and it was confirmed by HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys during a 2025 preview event.
“When we announce at HBO we’re developing this story or that story, keep in mind it’s developing,” Bloys told a group of reporters. “We’ve got two shows at the moment, including Game of Thrones. I think the movie is the same idea.” He added, “They’ll develop an idea, we’ll see if it’s good. We’ll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. That’s the point of development: you see, is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.”
Noting that “I don’t necessarily look at it from an investment point of view,” Bloys mused, “just like, would it be a fun, big movie? I think there’s potential for that.” But, he said, “it’s very early in the process.”
In the past, HBO resisted making a Game of Thrones movie. However, the world of Westeros has expanded in other ways. The original series, starring Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sean Bean, and others, told the story of the War of the Five Kings, a conflict over the Iron Throne in the wake of King Robert Baratheon’s death.
Next, HBO told a new story, House of Dragon (a show that currently has 2 seasons) set far in the past during the height of Targaryen power in Westeros and the civil war that crippled their empire. In 2025, fans will get to see the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which adapts Martin’s collection of novellas about a knight and his loyal squire.
Additional TV spinoffs are planned, including one related to Aegon’s Conquest and the unification of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners and series creators of Game of Thrones, always desired to conclude the show with a trilogy of feature-length films before they ended up making a six-episode final season in 2019.
Martin confirmed in 2014 there were discussions as early as back then about the potential of a film. At the time, he told THR, “It all depends on how long the main series runs…Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger [in scope]. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”
