After several months of rumors and leaks, Sony has officially unveiled the PS5 Pro, a mid-gen refresh of its current generation of consoles. This includes a confirmed price, specs, release date, lack of disc drive, and more.

Last generation, Sony gave us a PS4 Pro that aims at making 4K gaming more commonplace. The PS5 Pro builds on such an idea, and this console aims to offer a more consistent experience at 4K/60fps.

PS5 Pro Release Date

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro begin on September 26, 2024. It will be available for sale beginning November 7, 2024.

While the PS5 Pro will not come with a disc drive out of the box, it supports a PS5 disc-drive attachment. This means that existing PS5 owners will need to purchase the official disc drive for $80 to play physical games on PS5 Pro. This will also be necessary to watch physical movies.

PS5 Pro Specs

According to recent leaks, the PS5 Pro specs include a “High CPU Frequency Mode” which allegedly increases the CPU output by 10%, up to 3.85Ghz. Back in March, Digital Foundry put together a list of the reported PS5 Pro specs.

PS5 Pro Upgrades

On the official blog, Sony revealed the “Big Three” upgrades of the PS5 Pro, and between them, the console essentially doubles the power of the base PS5. In terms of hardware, there is an improved GPU, and Sony is introducing the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, which is an AI-driven upscaling tool similar to NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR.

Improved GPU

The PS5 Pro upgrades the GPU to offer 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console with 28% faster memory. Consequently, this enables 45% faster rendering for gameplay, which makes the experience much smoother.

Advanced Ray Tracing

The PS5 Pro offers enhanced ray tracing that provides more refraction of light and dynamic reflection. It also allows the rays to be cast at double and sometimes triple the speeds of the standard PS5 console.

AI-Driven Upscaling

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is an AI-driven upscaling tool that utilizes a machine learning-based technology that provides super sharp image clarity by offering extraordinary amounts of detail.

PS5 Pro Enhanced Games

In a similar vein to the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro is capable of playing every single game available on the console, but with better performance and enhanced features.

“Game creators are adding PS5 Pro support to new and existing titles and with the big three involved the results can be pretty amazing. With graphics showing something like Fidelity levels of detail but at double the frame rate,” PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny explained in the PS5 Pro livestream. “This goal of delivering almost Fidelity-like graphics at Performance frame rates has been achieved for a broad set of titles, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. We can see that PS5 Pro is close to doubling the power of PS5.”

PS5 Pro Design

The PS5 Pro is not much of a deviation from the current aesthetics of the PS5 and the slim version. This new model has several stripe patterns in the middle and is roughly the same width and height as the original PS5 so as to accommodate the higher performance specs.

What is in the PS5 Pro box?

The PS5 Pro includes a DualSense controller, a 2TB SSD, and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom, like the standard PS5. However, customers will need to purchase a vertical stand for the PS5 Pro separately.
