Larian’s Next RPG Won’t Be Baldur’s Gate 4, But Will “Dwarf” 3

larian will not make bg4 next

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been hailed as one of the greatest role-playing games ever made and successfully won the 2023 Game of the Year award. It would make sense then for developer Larian Studios to put together plans for a sequel. Many fans are clamoring for a Baldur’s Gate 4. However, the studio has something else in mind for a new game without a connection to Dungeons & Dragons.

In an interview at GDC 2024, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said that the company will not make another Baldur’s Gate for its next RPG. After initially considering making a sequel, though, Larian decided it would be antithetical to the identity of the studio.

According to Vincke, “That’s not what we were made for. That’s literally the opposite of what Larian is about. We want to do big, new things. We don’t want to rehash the thing that we’ve done already.”

Before, Larian wanted to make a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin because the story was not given the right amount of attention in the first game and suffered as a result. For Divinity: Original Sin 2, they significantly improved the narrative. Therefore, a Baldur’s Gate 4 made by Larian would be “more Baldur’s Gate” in a way that the studio would not want.

Vincke explained that prior to the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, he was planning out the future of the company, including what he calls “the very big RPG that will dwarf them all.”

“I think there is some tech that we don’t have yet,” Vincke said. “And I don’t know what the specs are on the next gen [of gaming systems] yet, but I hope that it’s going to bring us closer.”

It sounds almost unfathomable to think the studio is making a game so large it will make Baldur’s Gate 3 look puny, as this RPG takes substantial amounts of time to complete on its own.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a role-playing game developed by Larion Studios and released in 2023 for PC, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
